Erasmus Mundus Scholarships 2027: 87 Joint Master’s Programs

Every autumn, a large number of capable applicants search for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship application form.

There is not one.

Erasmus Mundus is not a single scholarship with one portal, one deadline and one selection committee. It is a framework. Inside that framework, 87 individual programs each run their own admissions process, set their own academic requirements and publish their own deadlines. You apply directly to the program you want. Not to the European Commission. Not to a central database.

Understanding that distinction before you start is the difference between a focused, well-targeted application and weeks of effort spent in the wrong direction.

For 2027, entry applications are expected to open across most programs between October 2026 and January 2027, including 37 programs that have never recruited students before.

What You Are Actually Applying For

An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master is an integrated degree delivered by an international university consortium. It is not a semester exchange and not a pass to pick your own European universities.

Each consortium has already designed everything. The curriculum, partner institutions, mobility tracks, credit recognition and final qualification. You join a program that exists as a complete academic structure.

By rule every consortium must include at least three higher-education institutions from three different countries. At least two of those countries must be EU Member States or Erasmus+ associated countries. Companies, research labs and non-European universities can participate as partners but appearing on a partner list does not make every organization a teaching destination.

Every student funded or self-financed must complete at least two physical study periods in two countries. Each compulsory period must represent at least one academic semester, normally 30 ECTS. Those two countries must differ from your country of residence at enrollment and at least one must be an EU Member State or Erasmus+ associated country.

Virtual study cannot replace compulsory mobility. That rule is firm.

After completing the integrated curriculum, you receive either a joint degree issued on behalf of multiple institutions, multiple degrees from partner universities or a permitted combination.

The €1400 Monthly Scholarship (What It Actually Covers)

The Erasmus Mundus scholarship is generous by postgraduate standards. It is also frequently misread.

The €1400 per month is not spending money on top of separate travel and visa grants. It is a combined contribution covering subsistence, travel, visa costs and installation expenses throughout the funded period, including study, research placement and thesis activity.

Program DurationMonthly AmountMaximum Total
12 months€1400€16800
18 months€1400€25200
24 months€1400€33600

Scholarship holders cannot be charged tuition or any other mandatory cost required to participate in the program. Full insurance coverage, accommodation assistance and student services are also supported through institutional funding.

Students with long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments may request additional individual-needs support through the consortium.

Two rules worth knowing before you apply:

A student who has already received an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship cannot receive a second one. And the scholarship requires full-time enrollment. It does not apply to part-time study.

Payment schedules, arrival arrangements and how initial expenses are handled vary by consortium. Check these details directly with your chosen program before making financial commitments.

Who Qualifies?

The core academic requirement is a bachelor’s degree or proof you will complete one before the master’s begins or an officially recognized bachelor-equivalent qualification.

Everything else, accepted degree subjects, minimum grades, English scores, portfolios, work experience, interviews is decided by the individual consortium.

There is no universally useful answer to “what CGPA wins Erasmus Mundus?” Some programs weight academic performance heavily. Others assess the complete file without fixed public scores. A lower academic average may be strengthened by strong subject alignment and a compelling research direction but no amount of extracurricular activity compensates for a missing prerequisite.

A competitive application typically demonstrates five things:

  • Academic readiness: your degree and courses match the knowledge the curriculum requires
  • Relevant evidence: your thesis research work or projects relate directly to the program not just to the CV
  • A coherent direction: your past experience, current skill gaps and post-master’s plan form one believable progression
  • Program-specific motivation: you can explain why this curriculum, mobility path and specialization serve your actual goals
  • Credible references: your referees can describe work they personally supervised and compare your performance to peers

One practical note on writing: outcomes outperform adjectives. “I coordinated eight volunteers and delivered water-safety training to 240 residents” gives a selection committee evidence. “I am a committed leader” gives them nothing to assess.

On the nationality question: Across a project’s funding period, normally no more than 10 percent of its standard Erasmus Mundus scholarships can go to candidates of the same nationality. Applicants from countries producing many strong applications are competing within both an academic ranking and a geographically diverse scholarship cohort. This does not disqualify anyone but it is a factor worth understanding before you decide where to focus your applications.

37 New Programs for 2027

The European Commission’s 2026 selection added 37 new Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters that will recruit their first-ever students for September 2027 entry.

The Commission highlighted these examples from the new group:

  • Water Vulnerability Engineering in Spatial Sciences
  • Medical Image Analysis
  • Semiconductor Chips Integration and Innovation
  • System-level Sustainable and AI-aided Structural Design
  • Chemical Nano-Engineering
  • European Master in Animation
  • Advanced Microscopy with Artificial Intelligence
  • Law, Data and Artificial Intelligence
  • Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation
  • Large Scale Accelerators and Lasers
  • Infectious Diseases and One Health

Search by academic field and prerequisites, not by country count or program title alone. A data science graduate may fit Medical Image Analysis while lacking the chemistry background required for Chemical Nano-Engineering. A law graduate may align well with Law, Data and Artificial Intelligence while still needing to demonstrate quantitative preparation.

The full catalogue contains both newly selected and continuing programs. Some entries near the end of EU funding may also appear. A catalogue listing alone does not guarantee a scholarship is available for 2027. Confirm scholarship availability directly on the program’s own website.

From Catalogue to Submitted Application — The Actual Sequence

There is no shortcut here. The process has a specific order and skipping steps costs applicants their place in the scholarship competition.

  1. Read the official Erasmus Mundus student overview. Understand the degree structure, mobility requirements and scholarship model before you evaluate specific programs.
  2. Open the official Erasmus Mundus Catalogue. Filter by field, country, university, duration or selection year. Use the 2026 selection filter to locate newly added programs.
  3. Go to the program’s own website. Confirm the 2027 intake is open and that Erasmus Mundus scholarships are being offered. A self-funded admission round is not the same as the scholarship round and applying through the wrong round removes you from scholarship consideration entirely.
  4. Check degree compatibility before writing anything. Compare your transcript with the required subject credits and accepted degree backgrounds. If course titles are ambiguous, prepare short official course descriptions where the consortium permits them.
  5. Study the full mobility plan. Identify compulsory universities, optional tracks, teaching language, internship arrangements and thesis destination. Choose a route that genuinely supports your academic goals.
  6. Prepare every program-specific document. Write your motivation statement around the actual curriculum. Show evidence connecting your previous study or experience with the specific problem you want to investigate.
  7. Contact referees early. Give them your CV, the program description, relevant work samples and the deadline. The assessment should remain genuinely theirs.
  8. Complete the consortium’s application form. Select scholarship consideration where the form requires it. Upload documents in the stated format. No current Erasmus Mundus program can charge a student application fee, though applicants may personally incur costs for translation certification or language testing.
  9. Submit before the scholarship deadline. A later self-funded deadline is not an extension of scholarship consideration. Save your submission confirmation.
  10. Prepare for an interview or subject assessment if required. Be ready to explain your academic preparation, preferred mobility route, career direction and the evidence behind every claim in your application. Interviewers probe preparation, not presentations.

The Deadline Situation

There is no single closing date for Erasmus Mundus 2027 applications.

Most programs accept scholarship applications between October 2026 and January 2027. Each consortium publishes its own scholarship deadline document and referee deadline separately.

Missing the scholarship deadline and submitting through a later self-funded round are not equivalent outcomes. If scholarship funding is your goal, the scholarship deadline is the only one that matters.

Monitor each target program’s website directly. Do not rely on third-party deadline aggregators. Program dates change and the consortium website is the only authoritative source.
