What the Program Actually Studies

Children’s literature covers much more than just reading and studying books.

The CLMCE programme combines:

  • Literary criticism
  • Media analysis
  • Cultural studies
  • Publishing
  • Entrepreneurship

Students learn how children’s and young adult books and media work in different cultural settings.

The programme also teaches practical skills for working with or creating organizations that produce, publish, distribute, or study children’s culture.

It is not only an academic programme.

In the second year, students complete a placement with a professional organization, such as:

  • A publishing company
  • Library
  • Media organization
  • Cultural institution

Students may also join optional summer schools at the University of British Columbia in Canada or German partner universities.

These summer schools can provide extra learning in areas such as publishing and digital media, but they are optional and do not count as formal programme credits.

Graduates can work in areas such as:

  • Publishing
  • Education
  • Media production
  • NGOs
  • Cultural institutions
  • Independent creative businesses

Because the programme combines several fields, it can lead to more career options than the name “Children’s Literature” might suggest.
