Year one in Finland, Germany, Spain or Portugal. Year two somewhere else entirely, your choice from the same consortium of universities plus France as an additional option.
That is the CoDaS Erasmus Mundus program in a sentence. Two years, five leading European technical universities, two nationally recognized Master’s degrees and a scholarship worth €1400 per month plus full tuition coverage.
Applications open in December each year. The January deadline moves faster than most students expect.

What the Scholarship Is Worth
The Erasmus Mundus scholarship for CoDaS covers:
- €8000 per year in participation fee waiver covering both years
- €1400 per month living stipend for up to 24 months
- Travel and installation allowances for eligible candidates
- Additional consortium fee waivers through CoDaS’s own funding
Over two years the monthly stipend alone reaches €33600. Combined with the tuition coverage, this is one of the most complete funding packages available for a European Master’s program. It is open to students worldwide not just European citizens.
How the Two-Year Structure Works
This is where CoDaS genuinely stands apart from a standard Master’s program.
Year one is spent at your chosen home university: Aalto in Finland, Técnico Lisboa in Portugal, TU Braunschweig in Germany or UPC BarcelonaTech in Spain. The curriculum covers core foundations — mathematics, programming, communications and data science fundamentals totaling 60 ECTS credits.
Year two moves to a different institution within the consortium. The same four home universities remain options and Grenoble INP-UGA in France joins as an additional host. Students complete specialization courses and their Master’s thesis during this second year: another 60 ECTS credits.
The result is two distinct academic environments, two national higher education systems and two separate Master’s degrees from the institutions where you spend each year.
A Summer School runs across the two years as well, bringing students from all consortium universities together for collaborative projects on industry-relevant problems in communications and data science.
What You Actually Study
CoDaS sits at the crossroads of two fast-moving fields. The curriculum builds expertise across:
- Signal processing and wireless communications
- Machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Distributed systems and network security
- Data analytics and computational methods
- Communications engineering fundamentals
The program is designed for students who want technical depth across both fields not just surface-level exposure to one. Graduates move into roles in telecommunications R&D, data analytics automation and network security. The double degree and the multi-country academic record are assets that single-institution programs cannot replicate.
The Five Universities
| University | Country | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Aalto University | Finland | Home + Host |
| Técnico Lisboa University of Lisbon | Portugal | Home + Host |
| TU Braunschweig | Germany | Home + Host |
| UPC BarcelonaTech | Spain | Home + Host |
| Grenoble INP-UGA | France | Host only Year 2 |
The program runs under the European University Alliance UNITE! and carries Erasmus+ funding status active from September 2023 through October 2029.
Who Can Apply
Admission requirements are straightforward:
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant technical field such as computer science, electrical engineering, data science or a closely related discipline
- Solid university-level knowledge in mathematics, programming, communications and networks
- English proficiency: IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent
- No professional work experience required
That last point matters for recent graduates. CoDaS assesses academic background and technical projects not employment history. A strong undergraduate record and relevant project experience carry real weight in selection.
Documents Required
Prepare these before the application window opens in December:
- Bachelor’s degree certificate and official transcripts
- English language proficiency certificate
- Curriculum Vitae
- Motivation letter
- Passport identification page
- Contact details for two referees and recommendation letters

How to Apply for Erasmus CoDaS Scholarship
- Visit the official CoDaS application portal
- Complete the electronic application form
- Upload all required documents in PDF format
- Indicate your first and second-year university preferences
- Review carefully and submit before the January deadline
- Await selection results and any interview invitations
University preference selection matters more than many applicants realize. Think about which academic environment suits your research interests for Year 1 and which specialization options at potential Year 2 hosts align with your thesis direction. The program is structured around that two-stage progression.
